Winter Ham and Potato Soup
When it is snowing and a blowing there is nothing better than something hot to warm the soul! Soup always hits the spot on a cold snowy day! Not to mention I have so much left over ham that I am putting it to good use! Tonight I made up some delicious Ham and Potato soup.
Now with the soup I made I used nothing less than Idaho potatos! Yes as an Idaho girl I am pretty picky about my potatos!
I have attached my own recipe that I use – I do alter it sometimes depending on how thick I want it and how big of a pot I want The recipe is printable too!

This soup is perfect for a cold winters day!
Ingredients
- 5 medium potatoes peeled and diced
- ½ c. Onion diced
- ½ c. Celery diced
- ½ c. frozen or canned corn
- 1 c. diced ham
- 3 c. water
- 5 chicken bullion cubes
- 4 tbsp butter
- 6 tbsp flour
- 2½ c. milk
Instructions
- Combine the potatoes, ham, celery, onion, water, bullion cubes, and corn in a large soup pot. Simmer for 20 minutes or until vegetables and potatoes are soft (but not mushy)
- While ingredients are simmering in a seperate pan combine butter, flour & milk, Continually stirring until all flour lumps are dissolved and mixture is thick. It is important to continue to wisk/stir so the mixture does not stick to the bottom of the pan. Once thickened pour the mixture into the pot with all the other ingredients and stir!
- Add shredded cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Serve the soup while it is hot and cheese is melting!
- Hot rolls go well with this soup.
