Christmas

The stockings were hung…

BY THE CHIMNEY WITH CARE!!!

About 6 years ago my mom found a pattern book of some really cute stockings that she decided she wanted to make for Christmas. She started on her set & I being the wanna be that I am saw these stockings & decided they would be fun to make. I thought maybe they could even be easy enough to make as gifts! HA!
First set of stockings I made were for my Sister Jeralee, her husband, Joe & their two daughters Moura & Charlise.. As if those four weren’t enough I set out to make three more for my Brother in law his wife & their daughter.
It took a LOT of time & hours and my mom being the woman she is put her set aside & helped me complete the two sets of stockings I wanted to make. The next Christmas I decided to make my mom put her set on hold again to help me with a set of three for my Sister in law Jenny, Micah & their daughter. My sister in law had another two babies the following 2 years so I ended up making two more stockings so she could have a complete matching set.

So at this point we had made 12 stockings… The entire time my mom put her set of 8 on hold. Well another year went by and since I had been remarried I had the bright idea that I FINALLY should make a set for myself. I think my mom about cringed when I asked her to help me again. You are probably wondering at this point why I kept asking my mom? Well she can sew, I mean REALLY sew & to get me to sew is like pulling teeth. (I hate sewing it takes to much patience & I don’t have much of that)

These stockings aren’t just your ordinary stockings they take approximately 10 hours PER STOCKING to complete. So when she committed to 6 more I think she began to wonder if her set would ever get done. I started on my set last year before Christmas & 2 weeks ago my mom came down & we sat up until 1:00 a.m. completing them.
So mom how is your set coming along?? (I know that isn’t even funny)

I have to say my mother is AMAZING. She is one of the most ambitious, strong, talented ladies I have ever met. She always comes to help when any of her children need it. She has spent hours sewing wedding dresses, baby blessing dresses, quilts, clothes, laying tile, cutting out wood, baking endless loaves of bread to bring to us. She is always scoping out the perfect book or christmas ornament to give her grandchildren. She has babysat my kids more then I think I will ever be able to repay her. She never sleeps. She calls every day just to have a relationship with each of her children.
This post is dedicated to my mom for all the hours she spent on helping me get 4 sets (18 stockings / 180 hours) worth of stockings done. And this is how they turned out, each piece is cut out in different material, each one embroidered with the person’s name & a saying from the poem “Twas the night before Christmas”
Thank you mom!!

Doesn’t my fireplace just look so cute with all these stockings??

One last funny thing. On the night we were finishing my set up my dad made the comment “Are you still working on those? Hasn’t it been years?” He had no idea how many sets we had made at this point & thought we were working on the same set from 6 years ago.

Oh by the way mom.. I have more people wanting me to make them some, what do ya think?

Yes, one of those people would be me! We use hand-me down socks Jer gave us, lol. Nice tribute to mom. We do have a great mom.
And I Love your stockings, your Christmas decorations, your house 🙂

They look terrific Avry! I have really liked mine for the past 7 years or so! They are unique and nice and big, so they hold a lot of stuff. You and Mom can thank your lucky stars that I am done having kids, other wise I may have hit you up for more. LOL

Loved the comment from Dad. That’s funny.

  • LIFE IS GOOD!

LOL! All but one of mine is done and guess who’s it is. Mine, I just have to put it together and sew the binding on. Last year part of them got hung up. Will have to do a post. Thank you so much for the nice tribute. Avry didn’t mention the problem we had with the one trim. I couldn’t find the material I had used and I had to unpick and put in a new color.

Those are some cool stockings. I wouldn’t mind a set too you guys! hehehe 🙂 Okay, maybe next year! lol

No seriously you guys should sell those, only problem is it probably wouldn’t be worth it with all the time it takes.

They really are nice stockings. Nice tribute to your mom. All I know is that it seems like for years now she has been saying “I need to get Avry’s stockings done”. She didn’t tell me how many sets were being made. I just didn’t know why she couldn’t ever get them done. its funny what we assume when we don’t know better. I remember our socks growing up were red leggings (I thing thats what they were called) Anyway, long red stockings that girls would wear. I don’t even know where mom got them. I just remember that they held lots of candy, apples, nuts and always one special thing. That one thing was what we were always the most interested in. 59 Christmas’s and all of them different.
