DIY Christmas Star Ornaments and Framed Reindeer

This post is brought to you by Plaid Crafts and Blueprint Social. The opinions shared are all my own.

I am so excited today to show you how easy it is to spruce up your home for the holidays with two simple craft ideas. First a fun rustic star ornament and then a classy glittered reindeer frame.

Upclose of ornament

First you will want to gather your supplies. For both of these projects I used the following items:
Folk Art Home Decor Chalks and Waxes
Mod Podge Pearl
Wooden stars (I cut my own on my scroll saw) you can determine your own thickness and size!
5-6 sponge brushes
Embellishments
Glittered reindeer (these can be found at the dollar store or any craft supply store)
Scrap book paper
used 5×7 frames
decorative frames (thin wood can be found at any craft supply store)
Transparent paper
Hot glue

Here are the Folk Art Chalk paints I used and the Mod Podge I used. I love the new trending chalk paint as it can be used on pretty much any type of project. I fell in love with the wax antique paint the second I used it because not only was it fast drying but it also gave my ornaments and frames a vintage rustic feel to them.
Plaid folk art chalk paint

FolkArt has a great color palette of 42 colors and 3 waxes plus a full set of brushes and tools to achieve just about any look you desire.
First take your wood stars and paint a quick layer of your desired color of Folk Art Chalk paint. We used a tan color and an off white color for our stars. Once they were dry I sanded the edges and applied the wax antiquing paint to the edges of each star. It gave each star a rustic feel.
As you can tell in this next picture the paint is super creamy, smooth, and has a matte finish that can be given a sheen look with the clear wax finish.

While the antiquing was drying we took transparent paper and found some free images online that we really liked. We printed them out on our laser printer and then cut the circles out. I Mod Podged the back side of each transparent circle and flipped them over and centered them into the middle of the stars. I love using Mod Podge because it is a water based type glue and sealer all in one and to top it off it dries CLEAR! I love that because none of my flaws show when using Mod Podge.
Assembling ornaments

Once each ornament was dry (they dried really fast) we chose our own embellishments to put at the top of the transparent paper. These pictures don’t show it but you can drill a hole at the top of each star and string ribbon through the stars to hang them from your Christmas tree or you can just set them inside the branches. You could even attach these cute ornaments onto a brown paper package!

The next project!! We basically used the same steps as the ornaments. First paint all the frames with the awesome chalk paint (you will use two frames for the one project) a thicker 5×7 frame and a thinner decorative frame to glue onto the top. While the paint is drying pick out what kind of paper you want to use as your background and Mod podge it to the back of the frame. Insert it back into the frame.

Assembling frames

Once the two frames are dry (with both the paint and the antique paint) glue the thinner one on top of the thicker frame. We just used hot glue to put the two of them together. Once glued together grab your glittered reindeer (we found these at our local crafting store for $1 a piece) and glue it on top of the thinner frame to give it a 3-D or shadow effect.

Glittered reindeer

Don’t like red glitter? How about gold? I love how classy this little gold reindeer looks on this beautifully chalk painted frame. Each project took less than an hour from start to finish. Perfect way to dress up your home and Christmas tree in a short amount of time!

Loving how they turned out! What fun things have you whipped up using Mod Podge or Folk Art?
